Do you not feel that the world cup was particularly dirty in the game play? I did not remember football being so violent, so nasty, so aggressive.

I felt that too, although I am not sure the number of hard challenges was the whole difference. What made it feel nastier was how often players arrived late after losing the ball, then surrounded the referee as if the foul itself were part of the tactic. Older tournaments could be brutal, but the aggression felt more episodic; here it seemed woven into the pressing and game management. Maybe the faster tempo makes every collision look worse, but there were matches where neither side ever let the temperature come down.

What the hell are you talking about? I was talking about the aggressivity between the players, the kicks, the physical attacks, the things whose absence supposedly differentiated the football soccer from rugby and similar violent varieties.

I checked the numbers, and the strange thing is that they partly contradict the eye test. FIFA counted 22.3 fouls and only 2.5 yellow cards per group-stage match, and one historical comparison calls the 2026 card rate a record low. That might mean the tournament was cleaner, but it might also mean referees allowed more contact without punishing it. The final is the strongest evidence for what you mean: Spain against Argentina had 46 fouls, 25 by Argentina, followed by a fight after the whistle, and FIFA later charged players with striking opponents. So perhaps it was not more violent in every match. Rather, some major matches were allowed to cross from physical play into actual aggression without enough early control.
